The American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen program is a certification program designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. It stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test are eligible for a certificate from the American Kennel Club (certificate is an additional fee).
Canine Good Citizens are tested on:
- Accepting a friendly stranger
- Sitting politely for petting
- Permitting someone, such as a veterinarian, groomer or friend of the owner, to groom or check them out
- Walking on a loose lead
- Walking through a crowd
- Sit and down on command and staying in place
- Coming when called
- Reaction to another dog
- Reaction to distraction
- Supervised separation from the owner
Any mix or breed is welcome to attend as long as the dog is 6 months or older. Bring a 6-foot long webbed lead, and a cloth slip/choke collar to the first class. Proof of vaccination is required in order to register for the class; please email, mail or bring to our office at time of registration.
